rose & ruby.

Handmade in Canada. All pieces are one-of-a-kind designs, and vintage re-worked.
I de-construct and re-construct using new and natural materials--creating pieces that are at once traditional and modern, feminine and avant-garde.

'Rose', because I try to produce beautiful pieces of art and jewellery; works that enhance the natural beauty of vintage and found pieces that are the base for my inspiration.
'Ruby' because she is my grandmother, who is strong, like the gemstone, and who has been a source of motivation and creativity throughout my life.
The pieces are meant to have a ‘found’ quality; they are delicate, precious, feminine pieces of jewellery, oftentimes asymmetrical, tangled, composed of mixed metals and materials—all of which lend to the overall aesthetic of rose & ruby—one that is a very personal statement of style.

Writing is an expression that eludes me. In this final stretch before my portfolio interview for OCAD, and the finish of my new samples for Sapphire Grid; I am in this moment, needing to write my thoughts.

I express myself through jewellery-making, physical manifestations of my feelings, thoughts about myself and the world around me. That which words cannot say, my jewellery does.

Here I am. Determined, and on a very tight schedule including finishing, setting, patina, assembly, not to mention problem-solving (because the wax settings for my pieces warped during casting), shooting my lookbook/portfolio in Montreal (tomorrow), updating blogs, writing a creative statement; ad infinitum.

Mentioned above is the final stretch in what has been a long journey beginning with finding some beautiful quartz and prehnite in Barcelona a year and a half ago, and having the idea/making the choice to take my creative expression onto a new path. The decision to go back to school came much later (and is a different story for a different blue moon in which I feel the need to write).

Here I am. All of this, it’s Sunday, February 17, 3:27pm; I went to bed around 5am this morning, with an alarm set for 8. I just woke up. I think the point I’m trying to make, to myself mostly (which pushed me to write my thoughts down), is as well a realization— that my body and mind needed the sleep, the rest. With all of this—the test of my creative energy, my determination— deadlines looming, travel, a photoshoot (including styling and photographing, concept and creative direction), nature (or whatever it is) prevails. My body knew what I needed- sleep, rest, something I hadn’t accounted for, or put on my list of things to do. Whether I wanted it or not, I wake now feeling good (tentatively), ready.
